Perseids Week at the Benalmádena Cable Car. Much more intense this year

Perseids Week at the Benalmádena Cable Car. Much more intense this year

The Open-Air Planetarium at Benalmádena Cable Car celebrates Perseids Week from August 8 to 12: this meteor shower is also known as St. Laurence’s Tears, and will be much more intense this year than in earlier ones.  The astronomical date at the Cable Car starts at 10 p.m. from Monday to Friday and takes place on the summit of Monte Calamorro, at an altitude of 800 metres, in a completely natural setting, and with the unparalleled backdrop of the Mediterranean firmament.

Experts from the Sky Classroom will be in charge of these special sessions dedicated to the Perseids, explaining how and why this spectacular meteor shower occurs; this phenomenon takes place once a year, and in 2016 its activity will climax on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 August. The sessions also cover other exciting themes related to the night sky such as recognising the constellations, bright stars, planets, the Moon and its impressive relief… and everything that the Mediterranean sky offers on summer nights.

The date with the Perseids is part of the Magic Nights of the Benalmádena Cable Car, which start at 7 p.m. every day in August. These magic nights offer a wide range of activities: in addition to the Open-Air Planetarium, there is the Birds of Prey Display, which takes place daily at 8 p.m., where the visitor will learn about the ancient art of falconry, the art of hunting with birds of prey, which has been designated as part of the World Heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Another of the “stars” of the Cable Car nights is the flamenco show, starting at 10 p.m. at the weekend. A night show of spectacular beauty, typically Andalusian, with a series of different numbers taking place live on the stage.

Benalmádena Cable Car offers a spectacular trip in comfortable modern cars, each holding up to four people, uniting the Benalmádena Coast and the summit of Monte Calamorro -one of the highest points on the Costa del Sol- for enjoyment of a unique landscape. In addition, the summit of Monte Calamorro has a selection of paths for walking routes and strategically placed viewpoints for enjoying spectacular landscapes from a height of around 800 metres above sea level, and spectacular daily falconry exhibitions, which in summer also take place every day at 8 p.m.

Benalmádena Cable Car is open every day in August from 10 a.m. until midnight.
